The US will conduct a thorough investigation to assure Japan that American beef is safe and must avoid more mistakes like the one that prompted Tokyo to suspend beef imports last week, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says.
Japan, which recently reopened its lucrative market to American beef after a US mad cow case triggered a two-year ban, suspended trade again last week after inspectors found a shipment of veal included banned spinal material.
