KEY POINTS:
Unix-focused SCO Group has filed for Chapter 11 in the United States.
In a press release today, the company said it had filed a voluntary petition for reorganisation under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code.
The company is perhaps most famous for its lawsuits against companies like IBM over various parts of the open source Unix operating system.
In the case against IBM, SCO alleged IBM had contributed Unix code to the Linux operating system that SCO owned the rights to.
The SCO board says it has decided the Chapter 11 filing is best in the long-term interests of the company and its subsidiaries.
If the court agrees, it will use money from SCO and its other companies to bankroll its capital needs during the 'reorganisation'.
"We want to assure our customers and partners that they can continue to rely on SCO products, support and services for their business critical operations," said CEO Darl McBride.
"Chapter 11 reorganisation provides the Company with an opportunity to protect its assets during this time while focusing on building our future plans."
