LONDON (AP) A prosecutor says computer-savvy scammers in London emptied job applicants' bank accounts by masquerading as recruiters from the famous Harrods department store.
Prosecutor Walton Hornsby said Thursday that the six alleged fraudsters posted bogus job openings to Gumtree, a classified website similar to Craigslist. Hornsby told London's Central Criminal Court that job-seekers who replied to the ads were asked to supply personal details, which the gang would then use to try to break into their bank accounts.
He said some of the data was harvested with the help of spy software the gang planted on the victims' computers. In one incident, he said 21, 000 pounds (roughly $33,000) was stolen.
The men were arrested and all deny charges of conspiracy to defraud.
