Electronics repairer Tisco is branching out into providing a mobile computer repair service in a move the 46 year-old-company says is a sign of the times.
Managing director Ken Shilling said the decision to move into computer, security and satellite television services was made because of the wider range of electronics most Kiwis have in their homes.
Mr Shilling said the move will initially affect the Auckland and Wellington operations, but expects to take the new services nationwide. The computer service will range from virus detection to configuring systems.
It is also moving to offering "smart housing" services Mr Shilling said. "It's the ability to use your computer at work to programme various items in your house, set your alarms or view the house on a web camera."
Tisco is owned by Tawa based services company Guildcraft. It has 25 franchise based outlets throughout New Zealand. It originally began in the radio and television repair business in 1959, but the change to low cost consumer electronics meant the company has to look to emerging technology, Mr Shilling said.
"This includes plasma and wireless communication services. There is a need for repair at the higher end, while smaller appliances have become throwaway."
