KEY POINTS:
The business community in Sydney is calling for the New South Wales Government to do something about the lack of rental accommodation in the city.
Patricia Forsythe, from the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, says the rental vacancy rate in Sydney has dropped to a new low of one-point-two per cent.
Ms Forsythe wants the government to hold an inquiry into housing affordability.
She says that a low vacancy rate impacts negatively on businesses, because it is hard to attract new workers if they have difficulty finding somewhere to live.
Ms Forsythe says the Government needs to make the issue a top priority.
"They do need to review policies that are impacting on housing for Sydney and that's not only planning policies, it's also policies in relation to taxation, in relation to developer costs," she said.
"There are a number of issues that need to be reviewed."
"It is probably time for a government inquiry into housing affordability in the Sydney basin."
