Lotto's assistant community benefits manager Samantha Parker said it was "relatively rare" for the same store to sell two winning First Division tickets.
In September this year, two winning tickets for Lotto's Fathers' Day promotion were sold at Unichem Stortford Lodge Pharmacy in Hastings, where two winners took home the top prize of a Ford Ranger each and in December last year.
The tickets were worth $333,333 each and were bought at New World Waiuku and Paper Plus Waiuku.
In August 2013, two Lotto First Division winning tickets were bought from Bethlehem Four Square and Lotto in Tauranga. Those winning tickets were bought by two different players who won $250,000 each.
"It's always exciting for a store to sell a First Division winning ticket - and to sell two for the same draw will bring an extra buzz into the store," she said in a statement.
Two First Division winning tickets were sold in the same small town of Waiuku, Pukekohe, for the same draw, each person received $333,333.
Countdown Pukekohe duty manager Rhonda Brown was unaware that her store had sold not one, but two, lucky tickets.
However, it appeared that the store was having a lucky run so far this year with it now clocking up a total of four division one wins - including last night's double run.
Ms Brown said the store also sold a division one winning ticket last year, too.
"I suppose we're lucky ... Yep it's had some wins."
The tickets were still yet to be claimed, she said.
Lotto urged anyone who had bought their ticket from any of the stores to write their name on the back of the ticket and check it immediately at a Lotto outlet, or online at mylotto.co.nz or through the Lotto NZ ticket-checker app.
Powerball was not struck last night so has rolled over to Wednesday's draw, where the jackpot will be $11 million.
A Strike player from Ngaruawahia also won $111,869 with Strike Four in the draw. The winning ticket was sold at Pharos Postshop Stationers & Lotto.
Meanwhile, Lotto's Home for Christmas promotion will see two families win the chance to bring a loved one home for Christmas. Non-winning entries will also go into the draw to win a $5000 travel voucher.
As for nine people winning First Division on the same night, Ms Parker said that was relatively uncommon, but birth dates could have played a part as all numbers were under 31.
"In September and in March this year, the First Division jackpot was shared by six winners in the same draw; and in September 2013 it was shared by eight winners in the same draw.
"It's difficult to speculate why there were so many winners on this draw. However we do know that people like to play special dates like birthdays and anniversaries, and last night's numbers are all under 31 so it will be interesting to talk to the winners and see why they chose these numbers."
