Solid Energy says it remains in discussions over the future of the Spring Creek underground coalmine at Dunollie, and the small Reddale open-cast mine near Reefton.
It was announced yesterday that Birchfield Coal Mines has signed an agreement to buy the Strongman and Liverpool open-cast mines near Greymouth, while a Bathurst and Talley's joint venture, Phoenix Coal Ltd, has signed up for the Stockton open-cast near Westport.
Solid Energy chairman Andy Coupe said today they were in discussions over remaining assets.
Although Spring Creek ran up huge losses while operating, the mine has been kept ventilated for over three and a half years, with a skeleton staff of less than 10.
In the wake of Pike River and new health and safety laws, together with the downturn in the coal price, every underground coalmine in New Zealand is now closed.
