WELLINGTON - Computer software has become literally just a phone call away for New Zealand businesses.
Unisys New Zealand launched yesterday what it described as the country's first fully operational application service provider (ASP) program.
Using the service, businesses can access information technology applications over the internet.
"These applications are 'rented' from an ASP provider [Unisys] on an as-needed basis, as opposed to one user having to purchase, implement and maintain the programme individually."
Industry analysts predict accessing software in this way could save organisations up to 70 per cent in information technology costs.
Unisys said in its announcement that such services would grow into a $20 billion global market within two years.
Clear Communications said it was partnering Unisys in providing the new services.
Clear would use its fibre optic network to connect Unisys data centres in Auckland and Wellington.
