The Warehouse is denying it copied a picnic table from a small design firm which is worried it will lose business now that the retailer sells a similar product at a fraction of its price.
James Daniels, design director of Auckland-based design company Mood, began making picnic tables in his father's garage three years ago with his two brothers.
"We pretty much invented it when we were down at the beach one time when we were putting beers and wines in the sand - we needed something to get it off the ground, and that's when the idea came about," Daniels said.
The Warehouse is currently selling a similar product in both design and size for $15, while Mood is selling its product for $49.90.
Over the weekend the retailer posted a photo of the picnic table on its Instagram page, and Mood had been receiving messages from customers, stockers and social media followers since, Daniels said.
