A leap day error caused Eftpos systems to crash at Pak 'N' Save, New World and Four Square stores across the lower North Island, Foodstuffs says.
Several lower North Island supermarkets, including many in Wellington, were without Eftpos for the entire morning after sale systems crashed.
Customers were warned they would have to shop with cash or credit cards.
Foodstuffs Wellington brand manager George Sutherland said he understood the Eftpos system had an error because of today's leap year date, February 29.
"Our sister companies in the upper north island and south island were unaffected as they have different point of sale systems."
