Small business owners fed up with chasing payments from their customers could take a leaf from a new book on how to dodge the hassle and get paid quickly.
Get Paid Painlessly - a practical guide to credit control covers all aspects of hands-on credit control from the basic principles to outsourcing, and offers tips on handling frequently used payment excuses, bounced cheques and abusive clients.
Author Robin Rainbow said credit control was just as difficult for small businesses as it was for larger ones. The task of chasing payments often fell to a general office person, who is left little choice but to invent their own methods.
The book served as a day-to-day guide to help them recover the money, and contained information that was not widely accessible without having done some formal business or credit control training, he said.
The average payment delay in New Zealand is 60 days. It gets worse around tax payment time, where it can stretch up to 90 days.
* Rainbow is the chief executive of Accounts Receivable Solutions. Get Paid Painlessly will be available in bookstores from February 15.
* Reed Publishing, $24.99
