LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) A court in Slovenia has sentenced a former government minister to seven years in prison for financial abuse.
The District Court in the capital of Ljubljana on Friday convicted Igor Bavcar of abuse of office and money laundering in a 2007 chain sale of stocks in Istrabenz company. The stocks changed hands several times before they were sold again the same day at a higher price.
Bavcar is a prominent political and business figure in the small, crisis-stricken EU country. Bavcar served as the interior minister during Slovenia's war for independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991. He was later in charge of the country's EU integration process.
Three more people also were convicted along with Bavcar.
