Prangs in carkparks cost an average of $1800 and make up a fifth of all vehicle-related claims, according to insurance company Youi.
And carpark collisions increase as shopping centres fill up ahead of Christmas, says Youi chief executive Frank Costigan. "Carparks are notorious places for collisions," Costigan said.
"As shopping centre carparks across the nation become increasingly busy and congested with many making the year-end dash to the store, it's likely there will be increased numbers of collisions as drivers look for that elusive parking space."
Costigan said research showed offenders did not leave their details in a "shocking" 33 per cent of all parked cars claims.
"The intense competition for space often means drivers try to squeeze into tight spots. People also often knock their door into other vehicles, with many cars bearing the trademark nick on the side," he said.
