KEY POINTS:
The Government is endorsing the merger of two of the country's largest science and research institutes.
Crop and Food Research and HortResearch have joined forces and will be known as the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research. The new organisation will have around 900 staff.
Research, Science and Technology Minister Wayne Mapp says the merger is a milestone and will combine the knowledge and expertise in the important areas of sustainable production and food and health.
