KEY POINTS:
Inland Revenue says it will process income tax returns correctly despite an error in its instruction booklet.
A mistake on page 42 of the income tax return guide incorrectly advises taxpayers to add their "total taxable income" instead of adding the tax on their total taxable income.
IRD has apologised for the mistake, The Dominion Post reported.
A spokesman said the department had updated its website and the booklet was being reprinted.
However, a taxpayer would still come up with the correct tax assessment despite following the incorrect instructions, the department said.
"While the term used 'total taxable income' is incorrect, the guide still tells the customer to get this figure from the worksheets on pages 40 and 41."
