KEY POINTS:
The number of people aware of the Government's KiwiSaver scheme has jumped in the last six months, and those likely to join has also risen, according to a survey by AMP.
Seventy five per cent of non-retired New Zealanders were aware of KiwiSaver, up from 49 per cent six months ago, AMP's SuperWatch survey conducted by Colmar Brunton showed.
Forty-six per cent said they were likely to join, up from 40 per cent.
"The research says nearly half the working population is likely to join KiwiSaver," said AMP Financial Services managing director, Greg Camm.
"That's an amazing change in six short months, in awareness and willingness to act," he said.
Sixty eight per cent of respondents said New Zealand Superannuation would not be adequate support in retirement, and increasing numbers had begun to save, rising to 71 per cent from 65 per cent six months ago.
Sixty two per cent contributed to a private superannuation savings plan, 50 per cent into bank or term deposits (up from 40 per cent), and 40 per cent into managed funds (up from 29 per cent).
Those saving for retirement by paying off their home mortgage fell to 47 per cent from 52 per cent.
More respondents also said they used guidance from sources other than themselves or friends, rising to 66 per cent from 56 per cent.
The survey had 500 respondents, and a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 per cent.
