Royce Willis was playing rugby in Japan four years ago when he went to financial advisers Macquarie Wealth Management to help him plan his future.
The former All Black had no extensive financial knowledge and needed a strategy for protecting his assets and making sure he had enough funds to study physiotherapy when he finished his playing career.
"I have never had a real drive to learn about share prices, bonds, equities and the like," Willis says.
Macquarie got him into investments he wouldn't have otherwise known about and provided a structure to his portfolio, he says.
Whether you need a financial adviser depends on your personal circumstances, Willis says. "But I definitely believe in using people with the right skill-set to perform certain jobs."
