NZ architects up for global award with 14 projects

Auckland's new waterfront theatre, the refurbishment of a Fanshawe St office building and a new chapel at the Anglican cathedral are local projects short-listed for an international architecture award.

The new ASB Waterfront Theatre, the Kauri Timber Building on Fanshawe St and the new Bishop Selwyn Chapel beside the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell are all up for prizes in the World Architectural Festival 2017.

Jeff Fearon of Fearon Hay said his firm had been short-listed for awards for its work on the Fanshawe St office building, the chapel and an Auckland house.

The awards were an indication of the increasing significant and improving standards in New Zealand architecture, Fearon said.

The results are due to be announced in November.

The 14 projects are:

• Mixed-use: Mackelvie precinct by RTA Studio

• New and old: Kauri Timber building by Fearon Hay Architects

• Office: Pollen Street office by RTA Studio

• Transport: Wellington International Airport Terminal south extension by Warren and Mahoney Architects

• Production, energy and recycling:Emerson's Brewery & Taproom by Beca Architects

• Religion: Bishop Selwyn Chapel by Fearon Hay Architects

• Villa: Forest house by Fearon Hay Architects

• Villa: Bach with two roofs by Irving Smith Architects

• Small projects: Tent house by Chris Tate Architecture
