KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - Australian shares rose 0.4 on opening today, in line with a rebound on Wall Street, as index heavyweights such as BHP Billiton and banks recovered from steep declines in the previous session.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index rose 22.1 points to 5,854.6 at midday (NZT), after posting its biggest one-day percentage fall yesterday since September 17, 2001.
