KEY POINTS:
Tauranga's $5.6 million replacement for Coronation Pier remains on track to be built - despite the near certainty the newly elected city council will ditch the planned downtown waterfront museum.
Developer of the new pier, Mark Scapens of Tauranga Waterfront Ltd, said it was a shame the plug looked like being pulled on the museum-on-a-pier, but it was not fatal to his plans.
He said a funding agreement had been concluded with council for his plan to convert an old Navy barge into a two-storey floating commercial development and 20-berth finger pier.
The council last month agreed to contribute $1.66m as its share of the project, on condition the new pier obtained resource consent from Environment Bay of Plenty.
