Seasonally adjusted electronic card transactions rose 1.0 per cent in the retail industries in April, Statistics New Zealand said today.
The core retail Electronic Card Transaction series showed a 1.2 per cent seasonally adjusted increase.
There were 77 million electronic card transactions with New Zealand-based merchants in April 2007, with a value of $4.4 billion.
The number of transactions was up 10 per cent from last year and the total value up 7.3 per cent.
However, seasonally-adjusted, the number was only up 0.1 per cent on March.
There were 910 million electronic transactions for the year ended April, with a value of $53.3b, up from 837m transactions with a value of $48.5b for the April 2006 year.
The mean value of each transaction in April was $58, compared with $59 for March.
For the year ended April 2007, debit transactions made up 56 per cent of all electronic transactions by value. This ratio of debit to credit transactions by value has remained stable since the beginning of the series in October 2002.
The mean value of transactions per person for the year ended March 2007 was $12,332, 8.5 per cent higher than for the previous March year when the value was $11,363.
