That the consumer electronics market is ultra-competitive is something we've all come to take for granted. Competition spurs innovation and keeps gadgetry pricing affordably sane.
Now a whole new battlefield is opening up as Samsung confirms they're launching a Smartwatch called Galaxy Gear in Germany next week.
The Gear is launching on September 4th, and like other smartwatches it'll pair up to a mobile phone/tablet, offering a second screen for viewing incoming SMS, email and other alerts.
Samsung's move comes hot on the heels of building hype and speculation around Apples iWatch which the rumour mill says will probably not launch until 2014.
The Smartwatch category emerged out of nowhere with the pebble e-ink watch that broke records on the crowfunding site, kickstarter.com. Others including Sony have since launched their own smartatches.
Little is known about the gear beyond functionality hinted at in a 2009 patent filing that said the watch would be able to access the Internet and make and receive phone calls.
