KEY POINTS:
Victoria University is to have an adjunct professor of official statistics in a joint appointment with Statistics New Zealand (SNZ).
SNZ is recruiting a new executive to its team who, while remaining an employee of the government department, will work half-time in the new position at Victoria's School of Government, the university said today.
The new adjunct professor would develop and deliver new courses as well as advocating improved use and understanding of official statistics in academic and student research.
Government Statistician Brian Pink said a clear knowledge of the use, breadth and limitations of official statistics, was vital in the modern public service.
Good official statistics were key to good governance and a cornerstone for objective decision-making, he said.
They provide an objective perspective of the changes taking place in national life and allow comparisons between periods of time and geographical areas.
