Toyota continued to stretch its lead as this country's most popular vehicle brand as New Zealanders bought more new cars in October than for any month since June 1989.
Figures out today from the Land Transport Safety Authority show 7904 new cars were registered last month.
That was 11.7 per cent up from September and 1. 5 per cent up on October 2006, the Motor Industry Association said.
The 2151 new commercial vehicles registered was marginally ahead of September and 33.9 per cent up on October last year.
Association chief executive Perry Kerr said 2007 was on target to have more than 100,000 new vehicle registrations for only the second time since the late-1980s.
So far this year 65,168 new cars and 21,079 new commercial vehicles have been registered
Toyota accounted for 21.9 per cent of all new vehicles sold in October, followed by Ford with 15 per cent and Holden with 10.4 per cent.
For the 10 months of 2007 so far, 19.1 per cent of new vehicles sold have been Toyotas, 13.1 per cent Fords and 11.5 per cent Holdens.
The most popular new car model last month was the Toyota Corolla of which 777 were registered, followed by the Holden Commodore with 573 registrations and the Ford Focus with 412.
The Commodore leads the field for the year-to-date with 5318 sales, then the Corolla with 4081 and the Ford Falcon with 2523.
