KEY POINTS:
New Zealand new-car registrations totalled 5684 last month, up 4.7 per cent from July but down 16.4 per cent from a year ago.
The Transport Agency says used-car registrations - generally imported used cars - totalled 6910 last month, 39 per cent below a year ago.
New commercial-vehicle registrations during the month were 1613, down from the 2004 recorded a month earlier, and down 22.7 per cent on August 2007.
The top-selling make in the month was Toyota with 1018 new cars, followed by Ford with 905 new cars.
