KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - ASX, the operator of Australia's stock exchange, has rejected a report that it may be considering purchasing part of the Nasdaq stake in London Stock Exchange in partnership with NYSE Euronext.
"There is no basis for reports that ASX may be considering buying a stake in the LSE at this stage," said Matthew Gibbs, a spokesman for the Sydney-based exchange.
Reuters earlier reported that ASX and the NYSE may buy a stake.
Nasdaq is in preliminary discussions with a number of other parties, such as Temasek Holdings, an investment unit of the Singapore government.
"We don't comment on rumours or speculation," NYSE Euronext spokesman Richard Adamonis said. Nasdaq spokeswoman Bethany Sherman declined to comment.
