TrustPower has agreed to sell carbon credits from its Tararua 111 wind farm to Japan's Kansai Electric Power Company until 2012. Under an emission reduction purchase agreement brokered by TFS Energy, TrustPower will sell 300,000 credits to Kansai Electric, which serves around 20 million customer in western Japan including Osaka and Kyoto.
One carbon credit is equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide being removed from the atmosphere.
TrustPower sold 228,000 credits to Belgian electricity company Electrabel from its Tararua II Wind Farm last year, and has around 600,000 tonnes of carbon credits left.
