Some of the most influential players in the America's Cup - including at least one billionaire - will gather tonight for a function showcasing Maori businesses, food and art.
Organisers hope the Government-sponsored event will open the door to future business opportunities for Maori, whether New Zealand retains the trophy or not.
Steffan Panoho, Maori business facilitator for the regatta, said he expected more than 200 syndicate members and others associated with the regatta to attend, including Peter Harrison, the billionaire head of the GBR Challenge.
The event, "A Celebration of Maori Business Achievement and Innovation", will be held at Mascalzone Latino's Viaduct Harbour base.
It will include a mihi (welcome), a fashion show featuring the works of Maori designers, and Maori opera singers.
Guests will be served a wide variety of indigenous food prepared by Maori chefs.
Speakers will include Mike Tamaki, co-founder of the Rotorua-based Tamaki Tours tourism business.
Panoho said the function was about building relationships as well as showcasing some of New Zealand's best food, art and culture.
"If business cards can be swapped and associations can be formed, whether we win or lose the cup, at least those opportunities for future business can carry on."
The event received support from money set aside by America's Cup Minister Trevor Mallard.
