WELLINGTON - Wellington technology company Total Metering is targeting the Malaysian market with its remote electricity meter reading system after completing a $1 million order there.
TML is chasing further contracts in the region, supplying equipment aimed at satisfying Malaysia's goal of growing knowledge industries.
One potential contract it is eyeing could have an initial value of $2 million.
The first contract, for 1000 meters at a technology centre outside Kuala Lumpur, used hardware and software designed and built in Wellington.
The meters, which can store information for a year and more, are read remotely via either cellular or landline telephone connections using modems designed by TML.
They can store information in half-hourly slots so that usage is matched to the tariff at the time of use.
So far, the company has targeted industrial users.
However, director Dean Gowans said that with installation costs - even for TML's three-phase industrial model - being lower than those for conventional residential meters, there was reason for high domestic users to switch to the system.
At present, TML's own staff in Wellington are the only domestic users although for electricity suppliers there are obvious savings in meter reading costs due to the remote reading and bill compilation which TML undertakes on behalf of energy companies.
Though meters are the bread and butter side of TML's business, Mr Gowans said the company's aim was progressively servicing converging demands for integrated energy and building management and e-commerce systems.
In its Wellington business, TML has 26 staff working on software development and meter quality assurance which is certified to leading international accuracy standards.
