Auckland-based internet start-up Jafa claims it will not be just another fleeting access provider as it goes live with cut-price account options available to customers only within the Auckland phone code area.
Jafa joins the throng of small internet service providers (ISPs) challenging the might of major operators Xtra, ihug and Clear Net, with cheaper access costs but "no frills" services.
New customers will be able to join up for 12 months for $96, including up to 80 hours of internet access a month and three e-mail addresses, but will face 0900 call charges if they want technical assistance.
An $8-a-month deal for 20 hours of internet access is also available, and the "Junior Jafa" package at $4 for 20 hours' access is aimed at the "average" user.
Jafa's creator, Michael Spencer, said the provider would make its money from add-on services such as 0800 helpdesk support, web hosting and content filtering, for which optional monthly fees will be charged.
And despite selecting for its banner a four-letter word normally reserved as a term of derision by the hordes beyond the Bombay Hills, the internet company is not ruling out going nationwide if there is sufficient interest.
