WASHINGTON (AP) The International Monetary Fund chief says she is confident that European nations will meet their commitment to provide further debt relief to Greece if needed, as long as the country meets budget targets outlined in its international rescue package.
Christine Lagarde said Thursday the IMF is still waiting to see the outcome of measures to raise government revenues such as increased tax collection and privatizations of state-owned enterprises. That needs to happen before it can determine the size of any potential gaps or shortfalls in funding the mandated program.
She also says the IMF is ruling out more austerity measures that would require across-the-board cuts in wages or pensions in Greece.
Lagarde spoke at a Washington news conference to launch a round of IMF/World Bank meetings with international finance officials.
