Local internet service provider Iconz has started an online reselling operation called TechXpress to sell computer and consumer electronic goods.
General manager Sean Weekes said his customers were asking to be supplied by Iconz and when he looked into it he got a surprise at the margins being made.
Iconz would start with supply from distributor Tech Pacific and intended to keep its margins below 5 per cent, he said. The firm would not need a warehouse as goods would be shipped directly from the distributor.
Last week the firm took over Nzoomail from TVNZ, a free email service with a reported 25,000 to 30,000 users.
Weekes said these would not be marketed to by TechXpress.
He said Iconz was not trying to provide a "portal" for customers but was meeting their demands.
Iconz is expected to be the largest locally owned ISP when the sale of ihug to Australian firm iiNet is completed next month.
