The country's second-biggest supermarket chain has cut rubbish by thousands of tonnes after introducing an anti-waste strategy seven years ago.
Richard Manaton, Countdown's general manager for strategy and corporate affairs, said the scheme running since 2007 had resulted in huge changes to the amount of waste sent to landfills.
His comments followed Foodstuffs on Friday announcing a new programme, started in March, to further cut its rubbish through aggressive recycling schemes, sending materials down about 10 separate channels.
