BERLIN (AP) Germany's main opposition party is seeking an apology from Chancellor Angela Merkel after she labeled it "totally unreliable" on the European debt crisis.
Merkel's comments, ahead of Sept. 22 elections, have irked the center-left Social Democrats of challenger Peer Steinbrueck, who have voted for most of her eurozone rescue measures while criticizing her approach.
In an ARD television interview, Merkel said the Social Democrats are "totally unreliable in the question of the euro crisis" and have proposed everything "from eurobonds, debt redemption funds and mutual liability to the opposite." Merkel opposes pooling eurozone debt.
Steinbrueck said this week Merkel was "destroying bridges" while chief whip Thomas Oppermann told news agency dpa Wednesday: "Merkel must apologize."
Merkel's office issued a statement insisting she wasn't referring to her opponents' past votes.
