WARSAW, Poland (AP) Around 700 workers at the indebted Gdansk Shipyard in northern Poland have walked off the job to demand overdue pay.
The leader of the shipyard's Solidarity union, Karol Guzikiewicz, said Thursday that August's pay had not arrived on Wednesday as had been promised.
Since May, the shipyard's 2,000 or so workers have been paid on an irregular basis as its two shareholders cannot agree on the way to save the yard. It is 75 percent owned by a Ukrainian company, with the remainder held by a Polish state agency.
Once the workplace of some 14,000 people, the Gdansk Shipyard is the cradle of the Solidarity union and freedom movement that in the 1980s led to the collapse of communism. It currently makes various metal structures.
