A new lobby group is being formed to boost public support for opening up trade.
With the backing of New Zealand export interests, the Trade Liberalisation Network will be launched on October 31 to champion the benefits of lowering trade barriers.
Newly-appointed executive director Stephen Jacobi said one of its roles would be to promote informed public debate by commissioning research and undertaking education work.
It would also act as an advocate to the Government and international groups.
The network's backers include the Meat Industry Association, Business NZ and Federated Farmers.
As well as recruiting members, it will talk to groups against trade liberalisation like the Greens.
"We think there should be a better balanced debate," Mr Jacobi said.
Mr Jacobi said freeing up trade delivered better living standards and stronger communities.
"Exporters I've worked with over the last 15 years tell me they need access to overseas markets to help their businesses expand. This creates jobs and helps our economy to grow."
Mr Jacobi's previous experience includes being New Zealand's trade commissioner in Paris, deputy high commissioner in Ottawa, and as a private secretary for Trade Negotiations Minister Jim Sutton.
The chairman of the Trade Liberalisation Network's establishment board is Meat Industry Association chief executive Brian Lynch.
