Kiwi Shayne Elliott, the son of a builder who grew up in Te Atatu South, is in line to earn up to of A$6.3 million (NZ$8m) a year in his new role as chief executive of the ANZ Group across the Tasman.
A University of Auckland graduate and former Waitakere College pupil, Elliott now lives in Melbourne with his family.
Elliott, the bank's current chief financial officer, will take over in the role from January 1 next year.
He replaces ANZ chief executive Mike Smith, who is stepping down after eight years in the job.
Elliott joined ANZ in 2009 as the head of its institutional branch where he was responsible for the bank's largest corporate and financial institutional customers across 32 countries.
