The Securities Commission says the financial reports of 16 companies out of 40 it recently examined against accounting best practice guidelines contained shortcomings.
It looked at the reports in the initial phase of its ongoing financial surveillance programme which aims to improve companies' reporting and "enable investors to have confidence in the credibility of financial information provided by issuers, and contribute to the integrity of New Zealand's securities markets".
