Reserve Bank of New Zealand Governor Alan Bollard is reported to be planning to step down when his term ends in September, according to the National Business Review.
The NBR says an announcement will be made in coming days, without attributing a source.
Bollard is a previous secretary to the Treasury who was appointed as governor in September 2002.
A Reserve Bank spokeswoman declined to comment on the report, as did the central bank's chairman Arthur Grimes, who is on holiday.
Bollard is an economist who also led the New Zealand Commerce Commission.
