The ANZ, with Singapore's DBS, has been tipped as buying a stake in a Malaysian bank, AMMB.
Malaysia's Sun newspaper reported that talks involving the purchase were at a preliminary stage.
Earlier this month, the ANZ said it might seek small investments in countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations. The AMMB is Malaysia's fifth largest bank.
The Sun said any negotiations needed the approval of Malaysia's central bank. It was not clear if the potential buyers were working together or competing.
