Graham Hodges, the boss of ANZ National Bank who is returning to ANZ's head office in Melbourne, yesterday picked up responsibility for the bank's Australian business.
ANZ appointed Hodges as acting chief executive Australia after the resignation of Brian Hartzer. Hodges had already been appointed deputy chief executive of the parent bank.
"I am pleased to have Graham leading our largest division in this interim period," said ANZ group chief executive Mike Smith.
"He is one of ANZ's most experienced executives and most recently he has made a major contribution as chief executive officer in New Zealand since 2006."
A spokesman was unable to provide details of Hartzer's new role. It is understood a decision over his finishing date with ANZ has yet to be made. Asked why Hartzer was making a sudden departure, the ANZ spokesman said: "Brian's left on very good terms and has resigned to take another role in banking internationally."
In an internal communication to staff yesterday Smith said he was saddened to see Hartzer go - a personal note that was omitted from the public announcement.
Hartzer was widely tipped to succeed former group ANZ boss John McFarlane in 2007, before the job went to Smith.
