The Canterbury Manufacturers Association says the latest economic figures should be seen as a clear warning, despite the fact the economy has staved off recession.
Gross domestic product data shows the economy expanded by 0.7 per cent in the March quarter, bringing annual growth to 2.2 per cent.
CEO Jon Walley says New Zealand must address its widening trade deficit.
He says policies are needed to increase manufacturing sales and business investment, and develop export markets in order to reduce New Zealand's dependency on the rest of the world.
