Nelson mayor says local redundancies are a 'double whammy'

The mayor of Nelson is describing redundancies by two companies in a week as a double whammy for the region.

Sealord is cutting 180 positions and just yesterday Nelson Pine Industry said it had plans to cut 60 jobs.

Mayor Kerry Marshall says both companies are significant and vital to the Nelson economy.

He says Nelson Pine is a good employer and managers would have sweated long and hard before making such a decision.

He says it is worrying for the people affected and he feels for their families.
