There is a long-term decline in manufacturing jobs and an increasing number of people working longer hours or working part-time, or in supplementary employment, a new survey shows.
The Canterbury Manufacturers' Association (CMA) survey showed that between March 1989 and March 2007, there was a steady trend downwards in the number of jobs in the manufacturing sector of 7 per cent, compared to an overall increase of 40 per cent in the total number of jobs across all sectors.
The number of full-time manufacturing jobs fell by 9.6 per cent during the same period, compared with an overall rise of 29 per cent, while the number of the part-time employees in the manufacturing sector rose almost 36 per cent, compared to 90 per cent across all sectors.
