The number of online job adverts increased 2.3 per cent in the three months to May, driven by strong demand for skilled workers in Christchurch.
The results are contained in the Department of Labour's Jobs Online Index, which shows a 12.6 per cent lift in skilled vacancies in the southern city, with construction and engineering workers the most sought after.
The Department of Labour's Head of Research, Vasantha Krishnan said growth was also up by 6.8 per cent across the rest of the South Island, but was weaker in Auckland - up 0.1 per cent - and was down in Wellington (-0.4 per cent).
Industries with the biggest growth nationally were construction and engineering (up by 10.7 per cent) and accounting, HR, legal and admin (u by 7.2 per cent).
Skilled vacancies were 21.7 per cent higher than a year ago, while vacancies overall were 20.1 per cent higher.
