I believe the greatest challenge businesses face is finding great people. The quality of the people you employ will be the biggest determinant of your success.
Surround yourself with a team of the world's best and attaining your goals will be easy. Surround yourself with mediocrity and I can tell you what your business will become.
I learned this early on in life. As my jewellery company grew from one store to three and onwards, I had no option but to delegate and trust those I delegated to. After all it is physically impossible for me to personally serve every customer who walks through our doors, no matter how much I may want to.
People often tell me they struggle with delegation. They are scared of losing control and think they would do a better job themselves. Or they are scared that those they employ will outshine them and put their job security at risk.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Hire great people, excite them with a compelling vision, and let them get on with it. There is no point having a dog and barking yourself.
By quality I'm not talking intellect, that only gets you so far. I have discovered what sets great people apart from the pack is the determination, passion and energy they possess. Yet such people seem hard to find. Why is that?
We are on the hunt for the next Michael Hill. At an event on Tuesday I will be sharing simple but effective proven techniques to help people achieve health, wealth and happiness.
We are also on the lookout for great people to join us in achieving our vision of 1000 stores and will be recruiting on the evening. I hope to see you there.
* Tickets for the June 8 Michael Hill seminar are available through Ticketmaster.
