Qantas Airways, Australia's biggest airline, cancelled 28 flights affecting more than 6000 passengers because of a four-hour strike yesterday by baggage handlers and catering staff.
Qantas will delay 27 other flights by an average of 15 minutes, the Sydney-based carrier said.
The airline is using bigger aircraft and deploying management to fill roles during the strike.
The move by the Transport Workers Union, involving about 3800 workers, follows industrial action by the airline's long-haul pilots and engineers, who are seeking job security clauses and higher pay.
Qantas, which controls about two-thirds of Australia's domestic air-travel market, has said the union wants pay raises of 5 per cent annually and job-security conditions in the next work agreement.
