Turners & Growers subsidiary Kerifresh has opened a $4 million cool store and dry store facility in Kerikeri. The two 430sq m cool stores used EcoChill natural refrigeration technology, the first time it had been used for kiwifruit in this country, the company said yesterday. EcoChill operated at much higher humidity than standard refrigeration systems which was better for produce, meaning fruit for export left the country in much better condition. Power use was also lower. Kerifresh general manager Alan Kerr said the investment was a boost to the Kerikeri economy where Kerifresh was the largest employer, with 130 fulltime staff and more than 550 fulltime positions during the main production season. The new facility includes a 600sq m dry store and office extension.
