The Auckland Chamber of Commerce says unions and businesses have to create a platform to go forward or they will destroy each other.
The reaction comes in the wake of a big jump in union membership of more then 23,000 last year.
Chamber spokesman Michael Barnett says some unions are getting tough on businesses. He says one example is the unions' five per cent pay rise campaign which has been reasonably successful.
But he says unions are going to have to decide whether their best strategy is to enable businesses to be successful or to put in place road blocks.
