Building consents trend keeps falling

The trend for residential building consents hit its lowest level since the series began in 1982, Statistics New Zealand said today.

Despite the falling trend, the seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings authorised rose 2.2 per cent to 1027 over the month, following a 9.8 per cent fall in February, href="http://media.nzherald.co.nz/webcontent/document/pdf/201119/BuildingConsentsIssuedMar11.pdf" target="_blank"> Statistics New Zealand said.

"The trend for the number of new dwellings authorised, including apartments, has declined steadily since April 2010, down 28 per cent to the lowest level since the series began in 1981," Statistics NZ said in a statement.

In Canterbury, about 20 earthquake-related building consents for all types of work were identified, with two being for new dwellings.
